Bible Study Methods

I am sorry that it has been a few weeks since I last posted anything. It has been a little crazy and I am still figuring out how to accomplish everything and write a little bit each day.

Over the past couple of weeks in our Ministry Leadership Class we have been discussing how to study the Bible. As leaders in ministry we must learn how to study the Bible, there are Bible studies to lead, classes to teach and not to mention proper feeding of our own spiritual walk. We have been concentrating on learning to observe scripture and looking at how to do that without study materials. (ie) (commentaries, dictionaries and lexicons) We will get to these valuable resources, just not yet in the process.

I would love to know what you are doing for Bible study? When is the best time for you to study the Bible? What book in the Bible are you studying?

Kyle, I have been taking an on-line bible course, to help with “quick” critical thinking, and a guy that I workwith he and I started doing word studies of random verses. I have also joined a site called “mybiblestudy.com” it is a lifeway site and while it is geared more toward the church and small groups, so I am begining to download a work some of these studies.Steven K. Regarding Bible study, I usually find that my best time (without interruptions) is 5:00am. It gives me time to pray and study before the kids wake up and the day gets going. It also helps alot to set the “tone” of the day. On days when I miss it for whatever reason, the day seems to not go as smooth. I also have some study time at night, but it’s not as “scheduled”.

As for content, I usually study several things. One, I read a chapter of Proverbs each morning that corresponds to the day of the month that it is. Secondly, I’ll review verses from the weeks sermons or from leadership class.

Finally, I’ll study the appropriate verses that correspond to the lesson that I’ll be talking about Sunday morning in class. I do this last one at night because sometimes it takes a while, but I also use outside resource for this (Matthew Henry, etc.)

    Thanks,
    George

Don’t know if I did the last one right so I’m trying again. Okay.Study – I’m doing a Mom’s Ordinary Day Study about “Entering God’s Presence”. The main point of the study is to help undestand the purpose and time for prayer. I just finished the first week and it was great! It mainly came from Ephesians 2 and Hebrews 10. It discussed why and how we came to have the great honor of talking directly with God and about coming to him with a sincere heart. I am also getting ready to start Extraordinary Marriage with my small group. Time – I have struggled for years with finding the right time for study. Recently, I helped start a bible study at my school during our lunch break. We are spending our lunch time in a classroom reading and studying God’s word. It has been AWESOME! We hold each other accountable and are there to share our individual studies and help answer questions each other has. I love it and look forward to it each day. I actually crave digging into His word! It is an amazing feeling!

KyleI have been reading through ‘ohn mccarthurs commentary on the book of Mathew. I think he does a good job of providing depth through ample historical background, some explanation of language. And refrencing other areas of scripture, but also drawing practical spiritual application. I heard once that intimacy is only acheived through large blocks of unhurried time. I think this applies to all relationships. I agree that the best time to meet god is in the am but more important is to spend the time and as much of it as possible.

Currently in the morning/early afternoon, I am reading through the Psalms one chapter at a time. With 150 chapters, this will take about 6 months, but I suppose it may take longer because I go back over previous ones every once in a while if I think it will aid me through my day. In the evenings, I am going through Matthew. In the past, I will admit that I had too much pride to read through the gospels again. I thought it was “baby food” and I wanted substenance. Well I have finally “matured” enough to know that ALL of God’s Word is substenance and went to the beginning: Matthew.I love reading Christian fiction books. My favorite is Francine Rivers or Lori Copeland. In any free time, I will read them. They have such great Truths and lessons in them, and they have not yet failed to bring me closer to the heart of God. Unfortunately, they are not here in Thailand, so I am enjoying the Word of God. I am praying for you Kyle. I can only imagine the trials you will encounter in India. If you can email me details, I may be able to find a cheap flight and meet you for a couple of days??

A few years ago, a good friend pointed me toward the MacArthur study Bible. Reading through some of the intro material, I found MacArthur’s recommendations for Bible study. He recommended that a person pick a book of the Bible and read it each day for 30 days; if it was too long to practically accomplish this daily, then to take half at a time. The idea behind this being that with each successive reading, the reader would glean more and more from the text until it was essentially engrained in them. I took off with this approach with the first half of 1st Corinthians. I realized something new each day that was right before me all along. This came about as the result of reading some of the commentary each day and by also understanding the context under which it was written. By day 15, and especially by the end of the 30 days, I was seeing my life through Corinthian eyes so to speak. The book and the message contained were coming alive. I lead our small group through this approach in the book of James as we studied service. More to come…Rodney

I just started a new site that specializes in teaching Bible study. This site actually shows you how to do a Bible study by comparing scripture with scripture. I would greatly appreciate your comments.
