Da Vinci Disaster

It appears that The Da Vinci Code movie is not going to live up to expectations. Here is a review by a pastor named Marty Duren. http://www.sbcoutpost.blogspot.com

I am wondering if you will go and see this movie or wait until it comes out on video. Let me know what you plan to do.

I want to go and see it as well as read the book so that when I interact with people about it I can say that I have read it (or seen it). This does not mean I have to agree with it though…so many times we Christians miss an opportunity to enter into discussion with people because we are boycotting something some book or film. This is a great time for us to engage non-believers about the issues the book raises, ecspecially the divinity and person of Jesus. Just some thoughts…..it was good to see you the other day at church. Hope you guys are doing well!matt

I would like to see it. I will probably wait til it comes out on video. I guess I want to see what all the hype is about. I sort of have the same draw to it as when The Titanic came out. It was based around true events yet Jack and Rose were ficticious. So there was enough truth going on in the movie to make us believe in the characters even if they were made up. In the end you know what is real and what wasn’t. I hope that people who go and see or read The Da Vinci Code, non- beleievers and believers alike look inside the Bible and do their own research to realize hey “blank” happened, but “blank” didn’t.

Matt,Good to see you also. I can’t wait to hear you speak at church. I am excited you are able to be there.I am not sure if I will see it or not in the theater. I have read the book and would like to see how they make the book come alive. I do not subscribe to the beliefs, but it was a real good book I thought. You have to keep in mind it is fiction.

What a great opportunity to engage the culture! The more people ask questions, the more important it is for us to listen and respond….

Hi Kyle,I saw where the movie took in $77M this weekend… not a bad haul, even though the reviews have not been very good. I’ll probably wait until the movie comes out on video — if I watch it at all. I’ll probably read the book. My daughter’s boyfriend read it, then my daughter read the same copy — so it is laying around the house anyway… might as well read it.Both of them said it was well written, but you have to be prepared for the blurred line between reality and fiction.Doug Easterling

Hey Doug,I just saw where the movie brought in a pretty good amount. I told Amy that anytime a critic pans a movie the normal public will love it. I have read the book, it was very gripping I thought. I would like to see how they made the jump to the big screen. Undecided whether I will go to the big screen or wait for the small screen release.

I’ll see it when it comes out on video. I enjoyed National Treasure and love this genre of movie. The great thing about all of this is, as people have said, is that God can and will use this for His glory. People will want to seek after the truth and hopefully find The Truth.

Kyle,I’m with you, I’ve read it (and thought it was very good/well-written) and would like to see how they adapted it to the big screen. My $0.02:I’m a little frustrated with the general faith community for adding to all the hype about this book/movie. It’s FICTION!!! How is this any different than going to see a John Grisham movie? I have a couple of thoughts:I caught a news story last night where a prof. @ Vandy hit the nail on the head (no pun intended): “We live in a Jesus-saturated world which is primarily Bible-illiterate.” Right-on! It’s no wonder people can’t see the forest for the trees on this, because the average Joe hasn’t even read what the Bible has to say about it, let alone know exactly what he believes about it.I find it interesting that Dan Brown’s previous book “Angels & Demons”(where he introduced the Langdon character and a fantastic novel as well), also fiction, has not received even an ounce of hype, movie plans notwithstanding. The story is about the selection of a new Pope for the Catholic church and, again, has a secret society and makes some pretty outrageous claims about the papacy.I believe this proves just how pivotal Christ is to mankind. The decision each of us makes about who He was (or is!) is woven so deeply into the fabric of our being, that a novel about arguably the most powerful and prestigious institution known to man, the Catholic church, doesn’t even make a blip on the radar of the media. However, when someone writes about Jesus, fictitional or otherwise, people come out of the woodwork to argue and defend their beliefs, whether they even know what they believe or not!I think our main responsibility as Christ-followers is to know the Truth and to be able to speak it in love to anyone who might be seeking it. This charge doesn’t change just because someone writes a book or movie that suggests that the “holy grail” was that Jesus was married. It is the same charge that we believers wake up to everyday. So my take on this DaVinci Code business is this: balance. It is just a move, afterall. If some don’t wish to see it, that’s their decision. I’m going to go enjoy what looks to be a pretty good movie for the same reason I go to see any movie…to escape reality for a couple of hours and enjoy a good fictional story. Let’s not over-spiritualize this and have the security in our faith to know the difference between truth and fiction.Speaking of which, does anyone know if they are making another Grisham movie? I love those!-Scott Harris

From what I have heard from others, it is best to wait to see it on video. I plan on waiting until then myself. I read the book and found it fascinating, yet frustrating, especially with all of the historical inaccuracies. Dan Brown is a great writer, but throws any ethical concerns right out the window on page 1 with the so-called “facts.” We just held the first of two classes at my church on the book/movie and how we can be prepared to discuss it with others in the world who have seen it, but do not know the Truth. By the way, word is they are considering making a movie out of his book “Angels and Demons” as well.
