On each mission trip I lead someone always asks, “What should I pack?” I also hear “how much should I take with me” in our pre-meeting trips. These are great questions to be asking as one prepares to leave on an international trip. In todays world with travel fees and limited luggage space we need to ask ourselves what are the most important things to have with us.

I have utilized a packing list for many years. I do not always take each item with me, but I list everything on one sheet of paper so I can decide what I will take based on the trip and the needs. I hate forgetting things or realizing later that a particular item was not listed on my travel list. Therefore, my list is updated often with new “potential” packing items. Again, just because it is on the list doesn’t mean I pack it for each trip. I like having the option to decide for each trip if certain items are necessary.

Here is the outline for week 1 of my talk. Hopefully the podcast will be loaded later today. www.lifepointchurch.org

Go…ology (Outline#1)

Emil Brunner (Theologian) –“The church exists by mission, just as fire exists by burning. Where there is no mission, there is no church; and where there is no church nor mission, there is no faith.”

Any study of missions must start with a study of mission theology.

Missiology = the study of missions.

Every great missionary movement was preceded by a movement of spiritual awakening.

John Piper – 3 types of people 1.	Those who go 2.	Those who send 3.	Those who are disobedient

Not all can go, but all can send

Define Missio Dei–Mission of God

Mission = God’s activity

Missions = Man’s activity to

Mission always precedes missions

God was the founder of mission. Jesus was the model of mission. God sent His son, Jesus, on mission to the earth to seek out and to save a people for God. Luke 19:10

Jesus taught the disciples they were to take on the mission of God in the commissions of the N.T. (Matt 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:47-48; John 20:21-23; and Acts 1:8).

Commission #1 Matthew 28:18-20

Primary verb is “make disciples”

Participles are going, baptizing, and teaching as you are making disciples

We are to develop followers, not learners.

Connection between authority and going–“therefore”

Commission #2 Mark 16:15-16

Main verb in the passage is proclaim/preach

“Go” is part of both verses, not central

This reiterated what the biblical message has stated from the very beginning. God’s redemptive mission is for everyone, not just one group of people.

Commission #3 Luke 24:46-48

Central theme of verses is message of repentance and forgiveness of sins

Commission #4 John 20:21-23

Culmination of the Book of John

The one who has been Sent, now becomes the Sender

Jesus tells His followers that as He has been sent, so He is now sending them (John 20:21).

Commission #5 Acts 1:8

The Book of Acts follows the outline of verse 8. Chapters 1-6–Start of the church in Jerusalem Chapters 7-12–Scattering of the church into Judea and Samaria Chapters 13-28–Sent out to uttermost

In Acts, Jesus tells the disciples they will be witnesses to the things they have seen.

The Holy Spirit directed and empowered the disciples to accomplish the task of reaching people, which is still the mandate of the church.

He came…He sought…He sent,

We go… We seek… We send…

We just finished packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child (Samaritan’s Purse) at church. Last year we packed 400 boxes and this year we are hoping to do the same amount. I wanted to post a blog from Amy’s cousin, Cheryl.

She has a great story that I would encourage you to read.

The Power of a Simple Gift

Three years ago, on a mission trip to Tamale, in Northern Ghana, I was literally dropped off at the doorstep of World Vision. Formal introductions were made and then an incredible discovery! At that very time, World Vision was partnering with Operation Christmas Child (Samaritan’s Purse) to deliver almost 2,000 shoe boxes to children in rural African villages and I was invited to join them! It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life.
There were 3 truckloads just like this that went to each village.

This little girl was too shy and afraid to ask for a box from the white woman who visited her village, so the headmaster of the school encouraged her.

Operation Christmas Child holds a very dear place in my heart because not only do they show God’s love by giving gifts to children in desperate situations all over the world, they share the Good News of Jesus with every child that receives a box. They do this in different ways, but the most effective way is by giving them a small, culturally relevant booklet in their heart language called The Good News.

World Vision staff, along with my dear friend, Grace Brew, directed the program.

The line became longer and longer…..and there were never enough shoe boxes!! I remember looking up and seeing the line and then looking down and seeing the empty cardboard box in front of me. It is a moment frozen in time. I will never ever get that image out of my mind.

These children patiently waited in line for over 3 hours

Two years ago, I visited a remote mud-hut village and saw firsthand the impact the booklets had on children. They had received shoe boxes several years before and a young man from the village had started a Good News Club. I sat in amazement during one of their study sessions and listened to the children recite verses, quote OT prophets, and tell of Christ’s love and provision in their village and their life. This in the midst of a predominantly Muslim culture!

It only takes a small amount of time and money to fill a shoebox, but the impact can be eternal.

What are some subjects/topics that are related to this subject you think should be included in the teaching? Maybe they are a full session or maybe a short topic or statement included in session about something else. I would love to hear your thoughts.

People who are talking, thinking, and writing in this direction:

Ed Stetzer

Alan Hirsch

Subtext

Al Hsu

[note to skeptics/critics - these guys challenge my thinking to live intentional in my culture so Christ can be known, we may or may not agree on everything, but they are leading the way in thinking missional]

On our recent trip to China we spent a considerable amount of time in a local bookstore on the campus of the local university. We were there to help the college students with there English access. Most Chinese begin learning English in the second grade, reading and writing. They do not speak English very well. There aren’t any native English speakers to converse with naturally. We utilized our Middle Tennessee English to help the locals converse and as a bridge to share the power of God to change lives. For many on the team this time in the bookstore was the highlight of the trip.

Ed Stetzer writes a blog post also talking about the positive effect of utilizing English teaching in the missional lifestyle.

Incredible stuff from an incredible trip. I began to wonder recently how could this be utilized in the States.
